The Oak Lodge Newsletter 2007
June 9, 2007

Greetings from The Oak Lodge!

New deck furnitureView from the deck

Hello from the Northwoods.   This will be our sixth summer in Maine, time flies!   The pictures above are of our new deck furniture off the back of the lodge leading down to our new private dock!   That was one of the most exciting events of last summer.   It is so nice to be able to pull a boat right up to the lodge.   Guests can bring their own boat, which was popular last summer and have it steps away.   The deck was a wonderful place to have morning coffee and watch the sunset in the evening.

Maine Guide Class

This summer we will be hosting a Maine Guide Class.   The class will be held June 21-24th.   Our instructor will be Carrol Ware.   Carrol spend 13 years as an oral examiner with the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for Maine Guide certification.   While the failure rate statewide for the test is 60%, Carrol's students have had an 85% success rate!  The cost of the course is $425.   We will provide transportation in the mornings to the lodge from the Rockwood docks and we still have one room available for participants to stay at the lodge as well, email me about those rates.

Cooking School

Back by popular demand, we will be hosting cooking classes again this summer.   As always, classes start at 2:00 and last about three hours.   The cost is $40 per person, which includes a boat ride over to Kineo for the participant and a guest (if a spouse would like to golf or hike the mountain during our class).   Classes are on Wednesdays.  Needless to say, we eat well during class!    Private classes can be set up with a minimum of four participants.

July 11th-  Marinades, Rubs, Aioli's and Compound Butters-  We will make these in class and use them to prepare an entire delicious meal.   You will see how easy it is to add a lot of flavor to a dish and make your own, fresh products.   No more buying Emeril's seasoning at the grocery store, you can make your own!

July 18th-  Chocolate !!!- Learn everything you ever wanted to know about chocolate.  We will be doing an extensive chocolate tasting and will write down our impressions of each chocolate.   I've found chocolates from around the world that I'll be bringing for us to try.   We will then make an entire meal in which every thing we eat has chocolate in it.   You will be surprised to find that chocolate is the hidden ingredient in many entrees- it gives  a rich, complex flavor to many dishes.   It's the food of the Gods in many cultures, come find out why!

July 25th-  Breakfast at the Oak Lodge-  Come find out the secrets to our favorite breakfast dishes.   We will prepare cinnabons, our delicious granola, Good Morning Cookies and yogurt parfaits to name a few.   The best breakfast dishes can be prepared the night ahead.   Make your next holiday breakfast a special one.

August 1-  The Slow Food Movement-  The slow food movement started in Italy and is now all over the world.   Based on the concept that we should eat fresh, local ingredients-it's the antithesis of "fast food:"  With that in mind, we will use some of Maine's fresh ingredients to prepare a delicious meal and explore eating with the seasons.

Staying at the Oak Lodge

We are pretty well booked for the upcoming season.   We have a few weeks available for weekly rentals of the lodge.   At the time of this email, we have June 9-16 and  August 18-25.   Labor Day weekend and Fly-in are also available, we have a three night minimum.   We have a few dates available for individual rooms, please send us an email and we'll let you know if we can make it work!

We'd love to hear from you.

Please let us know if you would like to be removed from our email list.
