Island History

  • Kineo Island History - Kineo Island began to evolve as a premier vacation resort at the turn of the last century.  The golf course was first laid out in the spring of 1899.  Yacht races became popular in the early 1900's.  A schedule of daily events in 1917 includes rifle shooting, golf, tennis and a masquerade ball in the evening.  Fast forward to 2002 and the area crawls with snowmobiles in the winter!
  • Hotel Resort History - The photograph above shows the Kineo Hotel around 1882.  It burned to the ground several times, was rebuilt, and was finally taken down for the last time in 1938.
  • The Oak Lodge History - The Oak Lodge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as a part of the Kineo Cottage Row Historic District.  The Oak Lodge is standing on the site of a one story log cabin that was called the Kineo Club.  The original building was built in 1886 and was associated with a hunting and fishing association.  This original structure has also been referred to as the kitchen that served the initially kitchen-less cottages.  The Kineo Club burned down in 1911 and the Oak Lodge was built in 1912 as a ‘double cottage’.  It is built in the Craftsman style.  Early photos of the Oak Lodge and the Kineo Club can be found in the photo gallery.
